inSITE’s ambit widget allows you to quickly create an ambit by drawing on the map, selecting features from your existing data, or uploading a shapefile from your desktop GIS software. In electric utility apps, you can also create an ambit by setting a buffer around part or all of a circuit.
To create a new ambit in any inSITE web application, open the ambit widget and click the New tab. Use one of the methods below to define the boundaries for your ambit.
Drawing an Ambit
You can define a custom boundary for an ambit using one of three drawing tools.
Click the Extent button then click-and-drag in the map to draw a simple box.
Click the Polygon button to draw a custom polygon with any number of sides. Click on the map to start drawing your polygon then click again to set an end point for the first side. Click again to add another side. Double-click to complete the polygon.
Click the Freehand Polygon button to then click-and-drag on the map to draw a freehand shape.
Selecting an Existing Feature
You can select any polygon feature in the map window and turn it into an ambit. For example, if your organization’s data includes management regions or county borders, you can create an ambit for a single region or county to track progress in that area.
In the ambit widget, Select a data layer from the Select from Map Feature menu. Click the Point tool then click on a feature from the selected data layer in the map window.
Importing a Shapefile
GIS users can upload a zipped polygon shapefile and turn it into an ambit. Your zipped polygon shapefile must include a map projection (.prj file).
In your computer’s file system, navigate to the folder containing your shapefile and select all the component files.
In Windows, right-click on the selected files and choose Send to>Compressed (zipped) folder to create a .zip file.
In Mac OS, right-click on the selected files and choose Compress to create a .zip file.
In the ambit widget, click Upload and navigate to your .zipped shapefile.
Saving an Ambit
After you define your ambit boundaries, the Active Ambit window will appear. Enter a name in the Ambit Name box and a description of your ambit in the Comment box.
To add optional notes, click the + button, type your note, and click Add. To remove a note, click the note to select it then click - .
Click Save to add the ambit to your library. Click Export to download a zipped polygon shapefile of your ambit boundaries. Click Cancel to discard the ambit and define new boundaries.
