Searching for Data

Search Panel

Click the Search button to open the Search panel. The Search panel allows you to search for data by keyword, find specific features in a layer, build a database query, or perform a spatial search based on the relationship between two layers.

Keyword Search

Enter any word in the Search Keyword box and click Search.

If your search returns at least one result, the Result tab will open and display available data for the first result of your search. The map will zoom to the first result and highlight the corresponding feature in the map.

Click Next> to view additional results. Click <Prev to return to previous results.

If your keyword search returns no results, the Result tab will not appear. Enter a different keyword and click Search to try again.

Layer Search

Enter the name of a data layer in the Search Layer box or or choose a layer from the dropdown menu.

When you select a layer, additional search boxes will appear for each searchable data attribute in the layer. You can refine your search by entering a value or selecting a value from the dropdown menu for one or more data attributes.

If your search returns at least one result, the Result tab will open and display available data for the first result of your search. The map will zoom to the first result and highlight the corresponding feature in the map.

Click Next> to view additional results. Click <Prev to return to previous results.

Spatial Search

Spatial search allows you to search for data from one layer by comparing its location to another layer. For example, you could use use spatial search to determine how many utility towers are within a certain county or how many trees are within 500 feet of a river.

Spatial search works on the results from a layer search. To perform a spatial search, first perform a layer search.

After your layer search returns results, click the Search tab then click Spatial Search. Enter the name of the layer you want to compare in the Spatial Search Layer box. Enter a distance in the Search within a distance of box and select the correct distance unit from the dropdown. Use the spatial relation dropdown to choose whether you want to search for results that are completely or only partially contained within your comparison layer.

If your search returns at least one result, the Result tab will open and display available data for the first result of your search. The map will zoom to the first result and highlight the corresponding feature in the map.

Click Next> to view additional results. Click <Prev to return to previous results.

Query Builder

Query Builder allows advanced users to perform complex searches on multiple attributes from a data layer. For example, you could use query builder to search a vegetation layer for healthy oak trees that are at least 8 feet tall or to search an imagery layer for aerial photos from 2013 with a resolution of at least 3 inches per pixel.

Query Builder uses fields, operators, and values to write simple SQL expressions. Each expression must have a field name, an operator, and a value that corresponds to the field.

Enter the name of a data layer in the Search Layer box or choose a layer from the dropdown menu. The searchable attributes from the selected layer will appear in the Fields box.

Double-click on a field name in the Fields box to add it to your expression. Click on an operator button to add the it to your expression. Click Get Unique Values to display a list of the values for the field you selected then double click a value to add it to your expression. Values that contain characters other than numbers, known as string values, must be enclosed in single quotation marks.

Using the vegetation example above, you could search a layer called Vegetation using fields called Species, Height, and Health. To search for healthy oak trees at least 8 field tall, you would build the following query:

Species = 'Oak' and Height >= 8 and Health = 'Healthy'

When you're finished writing your expression, click Search. If your search returns at least one result, the Result tab will open and display available data for the first result of your search. The map will zoom to the first result and highlight the corresponding feature in the map.

Click Next> to view additional results. Click <Prev to return to previous results.
